Pre-trial detention upends a person’s entire life and can result in the loss of work, housing, benefits, and even children who depend on your support. Furthermore, any person who is unable to obtain release from jail and return to potential income is far less likely to be able to afford preferred legal counsel. The government wants to keep you incarcerated before you get your day in court because citizens who are denied bail are much more likely to plead guilty in order to shorten the length of incarceration and yet also much more likely to receive additional prison or jail time upon resolution of the case.
